Santa Cruz Vegan Bake Sale for Japan

My very first post on this blog and it’s a doozy!

This past weekend I participated in the Santa Cruz vegan bake sale for Japan. The lovely Amey from Vegan Eats & Treats did a great job of organizing. We had 10 bakers contribute goodies and we made $1860!! What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than hanging out with some new vegan friends and raising money for such a great cause.

At the beginning of the day we had two tables OVERFLOWING with delicious goodies. I figured there was no way we were going to sell out and we were going to have a ton of leftovers (and what a tragedy THAT would be…).

Amey’s adorable Japanese flag lemon cake squares (from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World) and double chocolate almond explosion cookies (Vive le Vegan!). You can also see Nikki’s truffles in the background.

Nikki’s Welsh fruit buns. I didn’t get try one, but apparently they tasted like breakfast! The fruit was soaked overnight in tea, sounds delicious!

Gluten-free almond anise biscotti (Veganomicon) from Amey.

Gluten-free lime-coconut (Vive le Vegan!), also from Amey.

These cupcakes sounded like heaven! I’m super sad I didn’t get to try one. They were made by Dina and consist of chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter filling and fudge frosting.

Dina used to be a professional pastry chef (!) and has some mad skillz – she whipped up some pain au chocolat and almond croissants!

These cowboy cookies looked SO GOOD!

Dina made the Oreo brownies. The other things were my contributions: chocolate chip almond cookies, chocolate chip blondies, peanut butter chocolate chip blondies, and plain ol’ cocoa brownies (gee, can you tell I was craving chocolate?!). I had plans to contribute more baking, but the electric company had other plans, my power was out for 5 HOURS the evening before the bake sale! Boo!

Autumn made this INCREDIBLE looking flatbread. We were all hoping for a taste but it sold out pretty quickly. The recipe is from Chef Cloe.

Chai cupcakes (Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World) from Amey.

Yet another contribution from Amey – gluten-free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.

Pretzels from Autumn and an asparagus-tofu tart from Amey.

Dina’s pumpkin cookies were so incredibly yummy, it was probably the best pumpkin cookie I’ve ever eaten. Also pictured are gluten-free peanut butter cookies made with quinoa flour.

These cinnamon rolls from Autumn were so deluxe-looking. There was a little scrap left in the tray that we were nibbling on, and I assure you they tasted every bit as good as they look (recipe from Vegan Yum Yum).

There were so many other goodies that I didn’t get a picture of, including some delicious cookies from Hanna.

In the end we DID end up selling out! Here are the last two cookies being SOLD!

Check out all of the money we raised! Our cash box was overflowing.

It was such a great day. It was my first time visiting Santa Cruz and it seems like such a neat place. It was also excellent meeting some vegan buddies. Until I moved to the Bay Area I had never actually met another vegan in real life!
